Bicycling--Road-bike treks are available through Adventure Lanai Ecocentre (tel. 808/565-7373; www.adventurelanai.com), for $89 per person for half day and $119 per person for a full day. The half day, 3 1/2-hour tours are perfect for beginners, because they're all downhill. A 4*4 van meets you at the bottom with snacks, takes you on a tour of the petroglyphs, and then gives you a ride back up to the top. Trips for more advanced riders are also available. The center rents 21-speed suspension mountain bikes starting at $25 a day or $10 an hour.

The Lodge at Koele (tel. 808/565-7300) also has mountain bikes to rent. They charge $8 an hour, $35 for 4 hours, and $40 to $55 for 8 hours.

For general information about bike trails, check out www.bikehawaii.com.

Horseback Riding--Horses can take you to many places in Lanai's unique landscape that are otherwise unreachable, even in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The Stables at Koele (tel. 808/565-4424) offers various rides, including group rides that are a slow, gentle walk, starting at $50 for a 1 1/2-hour trip. We recommend the 2-hour Paniolo Trail Ride, which takes you into the hills surrounding Koele. You'll meander through guava groves and patches of ironwood trees; catch glimpses of axis deer, quail, wild turkeys, and Santa Getrudis cattle; and end with panoramic views of Maui and Lanai. The cost is $75. Private rides (where you can canter, gallop, and trot) are $75 per person for 1 hour and $130 per person for 2 hours. Long pants and shoes are required; safety helmets are provided. Bring a jacket -- the weather is chilly and rain is frequent. Children must be at least 9 years old and 4 feet tall. Riders must weigh less than 250 pounds.

Tennis--Public courts, lit for night play, are available in Lanai City at no charge; call tel. 808/565-6979 for reservations. Guests staying at the Lodge at Koele or the Manele Bay Hotel have tennis privileges at either the Tennis Center at Manele, with its six Plexi-paved courts, a fully equipped pro shop, and tournament facilities; or at the courts at Koele. Instruction is available for $25 for a clinic, $65 for a private 1-hour lesson. Court fees are $25 an hour. For information, call tel. 808/565-2072.

Perfect for a Rainy Day: Lanai Arts Program--A perfect activity for a rainy day in Lanai City is the Lanai Arts Program, 339 Seventh St., located in the heart of the small town. Frequently, top artists from across Hawaii visit this home-grown art program and teach a variety of classes ranging from raku (Japanese pottery), silk printing, silk screening, pareo making (creating your own design on this islanders' wrap), gyotaku (printing a real fish on your own T-shirt), and watercolor drawing to a variety of other island crafts. The cost is usually in the $60 range for the 2- to 3-hour classes and includes all materials. For more information call tel. 808/565-7503.
